On the last day of 2025 the digital storefront Epic Games Store offered what it billed as the 15th of a 17‑part series of 'secret' giveaways. To the disappointment of many users, the mystery title turned out not to be a new surprise but a repeat: the multiplayer medieval slasher Chivalry 2.
Chivalry 2 is developed by Tripwire Interactive in collaboration with Torn Banner Studios. The same title had already been distributed for free during Epic's summer mega sale the previous year, when it was available to claim for a week.
The repeat prompted negative reactions across communities. Many players expressed frustration that a year‑end 'secret' offering was not original; a Reddit user summed up the mood with the comment that the days of truly noteworthy free games seem to be over.
Chivalry 2 is a networked, medieval melee combat game supporting large battles of up to 64 players. It emphasizes sword fights, volleys of flaming arrows and large‑scale sieges, with combat sequences that draw inspiration from cinematic battle scenes.
Since its release in June 2021 the game has received eleven content updates, adding new maps, factions, gameplay features, items and progression elements. However, the publisher's active support for the title wound down over the past summer.
To claim the free copy on Epic Games Store users need to visit the game's page on the store and use the 'Get' button; the giveaway was not accompanied by regional restrictions. The promotion runs for exactly 24 hours and is scheduled to be replaced on 1 January 2026 at 19:00 Moscow time. Epic Games Store has not disclosed which title will be offered next.
