Bungie publishes a cinematic depiction of Marathon’s "Thief": grappling mobility, a loot-stealing drone, and a key heist in the endgame world

Bungie has released a new cinematic piece focused on one of the playable characters from the extraction shooter Marathon. The short sequence presents the character’s tools and behavior in a narrative style that emphasizes stealth and high-mobility play.

The feature centers on the shell known as "Thief." In the depiction, the Thief relies on a grappling hook for elevated mobility, allowing rapid repositioning and vertical movement across the environment. Accompanying this mobility is a specialized drone that the Thief uses to pilfer loot from other players, underlining the character’s role as a disruptive, opportunistic presence in matches.

In one highlighted scene, the Thief manages to steal an access key granting entry to a locked location that contains particularly valuable rewards. That moment underscores the shell’s gameplay identity: not just evasion and speed, but also targeted theft that can alter the course of an engagement by granting exclusive access to high-tier loot.

Earlier, the game introduced an endgame area called the "Cryoarchive." That location features a complex access structure and is available for runs only on weekends, positioning it as a timed, higher-risk objective designed to reward coordinated teams and persistent players with rare spoils.

Marathon launched on March 5, 2026, and is available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The new cinematic material serves to illustrate one of the distinct shell archetypes players can choose, clarifying how specific tools and abilities—mobility through a grappling hook and utility through a theft drone—fit into the wider systems and endgame content of Marathon.
